Archival Tag Study update
"The Archival Tagging study began in spring 2006 to determine the habitat used by Kamloops and steelhead in Lake Superior.  Information about habitat preferences will reveal how similar or different the requirements of these fish are, will help managers to make informed management ecisions about these strains, and will help anglers in the pursuit of these sport fish."

2009 Spring steelhead creel survey
The spring creel survey ran from April 10 through May 20, 2009 and covered 17 tributaries accessible to rainbow trout. The number of hours anglers fished for rainbow trout on the shore was 43,375 (92-08 average: 29,402). Angler catch rate for unclipped steelhead was 0.115 fish/a-hr (92-08 average: 0.073) or 8.7 hours fished per steelhead caught, while the catch rate for legal-sized clipped rainbow trout was 0.064 fish/a-hr (92-08 average: 0.122) or 15.6 hours per fish (Figure 1).

Figure 1. Catch rate of unclipped steelhead and clipped rainbow trout of legal size from spring creel surveys, 1992-09.

The estimated catch of unclipped steelhead was 4,974 (95-08 average: 2,156), while the estimated catch of clipped rainbow trout was 2,773 (95-08 average: 2,869) for fish 16 inches and greater. All of the clipped rainbow trout observed in the spring creel were Kamloops.

Beaver Dam Managment Update
"From fall 2008 through summer 2009, 43 beaver and 67 dams were removed from the Knife River watershed. Sixteen dams were removed by DNR staff, while the rest were removed by private contractors. The number of beaver dams was low in the lower portions of the Knife and its tributaries where removal has primarily taken place in the past."

The Archival Tagging study began in spring 2006 to determine the habitat used by Kamloops and steelhead in Lake Superior. Information about habitat preferences will reveal how similar or different these fish are, help managers make informed management decisions, and help anglers in pursuit of these fish. Tags that record date, time, water temperature, and depth were implanted into adult steelhead and Kamloops. When a tag is recovered, data can be downloaded. The tags are just over an inch long and have a battery life of two years. The tags do not transmit any signal, so we rely on angler and trap returns to recapture tagged fish. The adipose fins on steelhead were clipped making them legal for anglers to harvest.

Each fish with an archival tag was marked externally with tags printed with $50 reward for return to the MNDNR.  Signs have been posted informing anglers of this study, the $50 reward, and requesting that anglers return the whole fish, without freezing, so that we can obtain growth and diet information along with the tags.
