Plan FAQ's
Frequently asked questions about rainbow trout management in Minnesota's Portion of Lake Superior.

Archival Tag Study update
" The Archival Tagging study began in spring 2006 to determine thehabitat used by Kamloops and steelhead in Lake Superior.  Information about habitat preferences will reveal how similar or different the requirements of these fish are, will help managers to make informed management ecisions about these strains, and will help anglers in the pursuit of these sport fish."

Beaver Management Update
" In the fall of 2006, 70 beaver and 84 dams were removed from the Knife River watershed. An additional 6 beaver and 11 dams were removed in the spring of 2007 before steelhead migrations. The 2007 fall beaver reconnaissance flight over the Knife River watershed took place on October 22 (Figure 9). The number of beaver dams was low in the lower 18 miles of the main stem and the lower third of most large tributaries, where removal effort has focused in past years."

Rainbow Trout Fin Clips

Fin clipping is a management tool used to identify hatchery-reared fish. In Minnesota we use fin clips extensively in our rainbow trout management program.
Minnesota Steelhead Management:
 Angler Alert Sign Postings!
Some Steelhead and Kamloops rainbow trout have been released spring of 2006 with a second tag offering a $50.00 reward.  The MN DNR is hoping anglers release these fish in 2006 so they can complete a year long study.  These second tags indicate that the fish marked with an "Archival tag" that has been surgically implanted April 2006.  The date collected will tell us were the fish prefer to live.  Let's help the DNR by returning fish with the tags this season but, next season PLEASE HARVEST these tagged fish and report to the DNR.
